ABOUT SMEDENS (the Blacksmith ApS)

Smedens is the company behind the production, sale and development of Smedens’ organic food products. The company is based on the food paradise of Bornholm, a Danish island in the Baltic Sea. The intent behind what we do can be summed up in a few words: Unique foods with genuine consideration.

Our passion is to develop food products that are as close to their original form as possible. We make our products for people who don’t have the opportunity to make them on their own and those who are interested in finding the perfect composition of pure, organic quality ingredients. That’s why we have a great network of farmers and vegetable growers who help us find the perfect ingredients, which we then turn into our amazing product variants - without the use of additives, of course.

No frills - just pure organic ingredients!

We produce a number of products, including several different variants of ketchup; chili, curry and, of course, the Original. What all our ketchup variants have in common is that we’ve put a lot of thought into every ingredient we add to the recipes. We leave NOTHING to chance, and we’ve worked really hard to make sure you can taste the pure tomato flavour as well as the other ingredients we add - but we’ve also put a lot of thought into all the ingredients you might not be able to taste. For example, we’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how to develop and produce ketchup without any sort of additives.

How do we make sure the ketchup remains a fresh red colour? Achieves the right consistency? Keeps well? Brings out the rich tomato flavour and, in some of our variants, adds the right amount of heat from chili or authentic curry? It’s taken us a while to figure out all of that. It may take a bit more time when working exclusively with ingredients from nature’s pantry, but that’s our goal. In other words, when you buy one of Smedens’ products, you can be sure that you’re buying an organic, locally produced quality product. You could also say that you’re paying for all the things we DON’T include in our products, such as additives and other ‘shortcut’ ingredients that your body doesn’t really need or want. That’s what we’re passionate about, and we look forward to bringing even more great food products to market, as we believe consumers want to feed themselves and their loved ones with pure, organic ingredients without additives.

Smedens helps improve conditions for biodiversity.

We work daily with organic and local production, sustainability, renewable energy and local community engagement, and a large part of our focus is on how we can help improve conditions for biodiversity in our local area as well as the places we source our ingredients from. We have a 100% organic farm to fork approach, and when we eat organic products, we contribute to biodiversity in the countryside and on our planet. This is because organic farmers grow a variety of crops on their fields, providing habitats for lots of different animals and plants. It also means that we avoid having to use pesticides designed to inhibit the growth of unwanted plants or eradicate insects. That’s also why we’re SO proud of the fact that we’ve been certified as a BEE-FRIENDLY COMPANY by the Danish Beekeepers’ Association, which is very much in line with our intention behind what we do: “Unique foods with genuine consideration.”

Our Mission

Smedens’ mission is to be a growing, quality-conscious and socially responsible company, challenging the status quo to create tomorrow’s solutions for healthy, organic, fresh, tasty and world-class food products. Foods with genuine consideration.

Our Vision

Smedens’ vision is to shift attitudes and boundaries in an exciting market by operating as a practical and exemplary example of a sustainable, organic, high-quality production enterprise with optimal resource utilisation.

We believe we have so much to give, and we are ready to share, so the next time you’re looking for a ketchup that’s out of the ordinary, look for one with the Smedens logo.
